“Shirin Neshat – women in the society” / Neue Galerie Graz

18.01. – 22.04.2018; Graz.
Shirin Neshat and the discourse about the relationship between Orient and Occident in the Neue Galerie Graz.

Curated by Holger Kuba Ventura and coordinated by Günther Holler-Schuster, the Neue Galerie Graz shows photographs and videos from all phases of the work of Iranian Shirin Neshat, who lives in the USA. Her works revolve around the situation of women in societies shaped by Islam, and the contradictions arising between western and oriental cultural traditions.

The title of the survey exhibition “Women in Society” addresses two themes constantly recurring in the artist’s oeuvre: the role of the woman in Iran, and the traumatic impact of diasporic experiences which can shape a woman for the rest of her life and in the society in which she finds herself from then on.
