“Do not despise me the masters” Bruckner and his students are the focus of this year’s Brucknerfest. Teaching played a central role in Anton Bruckner’s life. Bruckner, himself the son of a schoolmaster from the provinces and initially a school assistant, was professor of organ playing as well as harmony and counterpoint at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna from 1868 to 1891. In addition, he taught harmony and counterpoint at the University of Vienna from 1876 to 1894 and gave private composition lessons until his later years. Thus, over a period of more than 50 years, he instructed hundreds of students, though without establishing his own “Bruckner School.”

Nevertheless, Bruckner’s teaching activities exerted a considerable influence on several generations of musicians. On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the death of its namesake, the Brucknerfest 2021 pays special tribute to the merits of Bruckner’s former students, who became tireless pioneers. The complete program can be found online.
