\nCinema that opens senses and eyes: The Viennale presents a cinematic discovery trip through the cinema of the world.<\/h3>\n

At Austria’s largest international film festival, every element is in dialogue with the other: The Viennale explores unconventional intentions and brings together both established and promising new authors and films from various economic contexts. Artistic director Eva Sangiorgi shows in her programme a selection of new film works from all countries, national and international premieres, all of them examples of bold film-making which stands apart from the aesthetics of mainstream conventionality and is politically relevant.<\/p>\n

The contemporary works range from the winners of European festivals, such as Nadav Lapid’s SYNONYMES and Pedro Costa’s VITALINA VARELA, to films premiered in Toronto and San Sebastian this autumn, such as AS\u00cd HABL\u00d3 EL CAMBISTA by Federico Veiroj and VENDR\u00c1 LA MUERTE Y TENDR\u00c1 TUS OJOS by Jos\u00e9 Luis Torres Leiva to cross-border films that open up other and different cinema worlds, such as SERPENT\u00c1RIO by Carlos Concei\u00e7\u00e3o, a cinematic first-person narrative from Angola; LA MIS\u00c9RICORDE DE LA JUNGLE by Rwandan director Jo\u00ebl Karekezi; HONEYLAND by Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov, set in Macedonia; and AND THEN WE DANCED by Georgian Levan Akin.<\/p>\n

The RETROSPEKTIVE collaboration between Viennale and the Film Museum is entitled “O Partigiano! Pan-European Partisan Film” and is dedicated to the genre of partisan film, which after the Second World War, as a result of geopolitical tensions, represented for years the national cinema production of certain countries. The Monographies series celebrates directors with a detailed exploration of their creative work, such as Angela Schanelec, Pierre Creton, Ala Eddine Slim or S\u00edlvia Das Fadas. The HISTOGRAFIEN write the stories and history of cinema through the cinema itself.<\/p>\n

Austrian film is represented by LITTLE JOE by Jessica Hausner, DIE DOHNAL by Sabine Derflinger, DIESER FILM IST EIN GESCHENK by Anja Salomonowitz, SPACE DOGS by Elsa Kremser and Levin Peter.<\/p>\n

In addition to contemporary cinema, which avoids genre boundaries, discussions, exhibitions and concerts are as much a part of the programme as festivals and musical events.<\/p>\n
