The exhibition “Die gezeichnete Welt der Emmy Haesele” is on view at Lentos. Emmy Haesele (1894-1987) grew up in upper middle-class circumstances in Vienna. After the First World War she moves with her husband, the doctor Hans Haesele, to the small rural community of Unken near Lofer. Comprehensively interested in philosophy and theosophy, she began to draw in 1931. Oskar A. H. Schmitz, writer and brother-in-law of Alfred Kubin, soon arranged a meeting between the supernaturalist woman and the renowned draftsman Kubin. By 1936, the relationship between the aging magician von Zwickledt and the young, self-confident Emmy intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by her inner images, she creates expressive, fairy-tale-like, sometimes disturbingly pointed symbols. Thematically, her drawings gradually draw ever wider circles: from her own love affliction and the death of close relatives to religious motifs and profane themes and global contexts of environmental protection and the Cold War. The exhibition at Lentos presents a comprehensive retrospective of her work. Hemma Schmutz, artistic director of the Lentos, shows with this exhibition once again that she, together with her team, knows how to offer an exciting and appealing program that is also rooted locally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
