When the image of painting changed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is hard to imagine that it was once the academies that determined what counted as the artistic canon in painting and what did not. With the turn of the century around 1900 and especially the invention of photography, there was a steady change in painting, which received a boost particularly from Jackson Pollock in the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

G\u00fcnter Brus and Alfons Schilling became acquainted with the painting of the “New York School” and abstract expressionism, when they met the American artist Joan Merrit on Mallorca in 1960.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the exhibition “Ausstieg aus dem Bild” (Exit the Image) one can see how the two artists deal with abstraction and a new concept of the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schilling detaches the panel painting from the rigid board and times henceforth on rotating discs. Whereas G\u00fcnter Brus lets the gestural and the body flow in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The departure from the picture leads to abstraction and actionism. The press at the time was more than overwhelmed by the pictorial power of the young generation of artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
