In her creative workshops, “the creative fillip”, graphic designer\u00a0Elisabeth Marek offers people in difficult life situations a safe\u00a0space for artistic development. By experimenting with different\u00a0materials and techniques, they can discover their artistic potential\u00a0here and take a “mental break” from their everyday worries.<\/p>\n

There are many barriers that disadvantage people socially,\u00a0economically or culturally. Perhaps they can’t cope with the\u00a0institutional education system, or can hardly afford their lives, are\u00a0unemployed or have had to flee from terror, violence and war.\u00a0Unemployment, poverty and flight have become global problems on\u00a0an unprecedented scale.
\nOften, people in such difficult situations have no “time out”.\u00a0They have almost no opportunity to break out of their everyday lives,\u00a0which are often dominated by problems. The social project “the\u00a0creative fillip” set up by Elisabeth Marek has developed a very special
\nsolution approach to this problem: it\u00a0is based entirely on the power of creativity, and provides an artistic
\n“time out”. In this way, people in problematic life situations are given\u00a0the chance to leave their troubles behind, at least for a short while. At\u00a0the same time, they can find out about and use their creative\u00a0potential in a safe environment.<\/p>\n

A creative break to foster
\ncourage and self-belief”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“The creative fillip” was founded in 2013 by the graphic
\ndesigner Elisabeth Marek. Since she didn’t enjoy working alone at the\u00a0computer, she decided to set up a project that challenged her. Her\u00a0aim was to enable other people to develop their creative manual\u00a0skills. People in difficult situations in particular need such spaces to\u00a0be able to develop their creativity freely.
\nIn a range of different creative workshops and workshop
\nprogrammes, people at “the creative fillip” are given the chance to\u00a0work creatively entirely without the pressure of being judged for their\u00a0output. The participants in the groups differ widely. The project is\u00a0directed at refugees, the unemployed, and children and young people\u00a0from difficult backgrounds.\u00a0A protected, free space is created in which they can live out\u00a0their creative impulses and experiment in a supportive environment.\u00a0Participants can give artistic expression to their dreams, thoughts and
\nfeelings. At the same time, a bridge is built between different cultures\u00a0and groups.\u00a0Different materials and work techniques are explored together.
\nA new learning space is provided in which participants’ own creative\u00a0skills can be explored and expanded. They work together, get to know\u00a0each other and in so doing, discover that good cooperation and a\u00a0good way of interacting with each other are possible.
\nThe creative workshops in “the creative fillip” are not just
\nplaces for creative expression, learning and meeting other people,\u00a0however. They are also a kind of “mental short break”. The\u00a0participants can briefly remove themselves from the otherwise often\u00a0problematic conditions in their everyday lives and “free their minds”.<\/p>\n

Recently, the works created were presented to the general\u00a0public in exhibitions. These exhibition openings mean that those\u00a0involved are the subject of positive attention and acknowledgement –\u00a0something that they often don’t experience elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Material as the starting point for a creative journey<\/h4>\n

It’s not just the composition of the groups that is a colorful\u00a0mixture, but also the materials and techniques used. Each of “the\u00a0creative fillip” workshops focuses on one material or one specific\u00a0technique. However, from a general starting point, anyone can set out\u00a0on their own “creative journey”. There are no rules or limitations as
\nto how the material or technique should be used. The focus is on the\u00a0creative process\u00a0and shared experimentation. Whether participants work alone or in a
\nteam on a piece or entire series of works is entirely up to the\u00a0individual creative minds. In a process of exchange in the group,\u00a0independent projects emerge which usually deal with very personal\u00a0themes.
\nIn the “paper” workshop, for example, a group of young
\npeople from the Ute Bock refugee project work with colors and\u00a0paper for a week. After fleeing to Europe, in many cases with the\u00a0journey lasting several months, this was the first opportunity for\u00a0many to give artistic expression to their experiences. When trying out\u00a0their skills and experimenting with the materials, independent works
\nwere created, which were then shown at an exhibition opening. In\u00a0turn, for the “Le\u00f3n – Telica” project, “the creative fillip” was a guest for\u00a0three months in the two towns in Nicaragua of the same name. For\u00a0around 80 young people whose everyday lives are otherwise
\ndominated by crime, drugs and violence, a place of retreat and\u00a0discovery was created. In the daily workshops, they learned different\u00a0creative techniques and worked with materials such as wood,\u00a0cardboard, shells, seeds or plastic bottles. In “Bock ‘n’ Roll”, eight\u00a0asylum seekers designed and produced skateboards in a creative
\nworkshop lasting for two weeks. With the basic module, “one board,\u00a0two axes, four wheels” as a starting point, the participants developed\u00a0their own very individual forms and built one-off pieces. During the\u00a0process, they learned basic woodworking techniques, could give free\u00a0range to their creativity with their designs, and at the same time
\nlearned how to behave within a heterogeneous group in an informal\u00a0way.
\n“The creative fillip” has been a registered association since\u00a0March 2016. As a non-profit organisation, “the creative fillip” is\u00a0funded solely through donations and the sale of the items produced\u00a0in the workshops.
\nThrough cooperation with existing organisations from the
\nsocial sector, interested parties were identified and informed about\u00a0the creative workshops. All the work is organised and managed by\u00a0Elisabeth Marek together with a team of volunteers.<\/p>\n
