It is a premiere: the work of the German Dadaist, painter and photomontage artist Hannah H\u00f6ch (1889-1978) will be on display in Austria for the first time and will be honoured with a major museum retrospective at the Belvedere. H\u00f6ch was one of the central protagonists of art in the 1920s and is considered a co-inventor of collage and photomontage. Equipped with glue and scissors, she explored the power and impact of images in her art in an ironic and sharp-sighted way.
The exhibition focuses on Hannah H\u00f6ch’s collages and photomontages. Little is known about H\u00f6ch’s understanding of photomontage as closely related to film – as a “static film” on paper that can open up new perspectives on the world with the help of editing and composition. What film and photomontage have in common is the technique of montage: both dissect the world optically and mechanically into sections in order to reassemble them and thus create new visual experiences.
In addition to 80 photomontages by Hannah H\u00f6ch, a selection of paintings, drawings and prints as well as archival material from the artist’s estate will be on display. The works will be shown in dialogue with film projections by Hans Richter, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Moholy-Nagy, Viking Eggeling, Jan Cornelis Mol, Alexander Dowschenko, Dziga Vertov, Fernand Leg\u00e9r, Wilhelm Prager and Paul Painlev\u00e9, whom H\u00f6ch knew and from whom she received artistic inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
