It gives us backing, support and security; it shapes and influences who we are and how we feel.<br>Whether parents, siblings, extended family or family of choice &#8211; these connections can have a significant impact on our well-being. Dysfunctional patterns and intergenerational trauma resulting from conflict, violence, neglect or abuse can become deeply entrenched and put a strain on relationships. Not all families are ideal.<br>Choosing a family freely means maintaining close relationships with people who are not biologically related but occupy an important place in life, such as friends, partners or lovers.
