The exhibition also explores the question of how Klimt created his legendary golden paintings. How did he apply the gold to the canvas? Macro photographs show that Klimt only used precious gold leaf for his paintings. On display is Klimt’s iconic painting Judith, one of the first works in which the artist worked with gold. Finally, the show curated by Franz Smola presents a hypothetical reconstruction of the colourfulness of Klimt’s so-called faculty paintings. These monumental canvases with allegorical depictions of philosophy, medicine and jurisprudence were originally intended for the ceiling of the ballroom of Vienna University, where they never ended up. They were destroyed in a fire in the final days of the Second World War. Their appearance was previously only known from black and white photographs. In cooperation with Google Arts & Culture, an attempt was made to reconstruct their original colours using artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
