Emde\u2019s work is characterised by an intense exploration of identity, memory and the narratives of a material culture of remembrance. A central motif in his oeuvre is \u2018Steiff\u2019 soft toys, which he stages as stand-ins for human emotions. Stylistically, Emde deliberately breaks with the supposed gentleness of his subjects: his application of paint is often impasto and expressive, with bold and direct brushstrokes. Through this almost raw, tactile texture, he strips the objects of any superficial cuteness and places them in complex, often melancholic or humorous contexts. The exhibition establishes a dynamic dialogue between these different media.
