Through best practice examples\u00a0such as LifeCircle\u00a0Tower ONE in Dornbirn, an\u00a0eight-storey timber construction,\u00a0the region shows\u00a0that it is aiming high with\u00a0its regional construction\u00a0material resource of timber.<\/h1>\n

In this exemplary project for sustainable\u00a0building by Hermann Kaufmann ZT\u00a0GmbH architects, it was for the first time\u00a0possible to make the load-bearing gluedlaminated\u00a0timber girders remain visible.\u00a0LifeCircle Tower ONE is Austria\u2019s first building\u00a0in timber construction to reach high-rise\u00a0building dimensions.<\/p>\n

With the innovative construction technique,\u00a0prefab timber modules, grouped around an\u00a0in-situ mixed concrete core, eight storeys\u00a0were erected by a team of only five assembly\u00a0people in only eight days. The key to success\u00a0is a timber-concrete composite slab. The objective\u00a0of this pioneering construction was to\u00a0test the system in terms of functionality and\u00a0to present it as a future-proof model. The value\u00a0chain of this regional resource shall continue\u00a0to be fostered. Hardly a surprise that\u00a0this building won the timber construction\u00a0award in 2013. Good examples are followed\u00a0with pleasure. At the end of 2013 with the\u00a0same architectural management\u00a0and the\u00a0same client, CREE invented by Rhomberg,\u00a0the Vorarlberger Illwerk hydro-electric centre\u00a0of excellence, constructed in the same\u00a0timber hybrid technology, was inaugurated\u00a0in Montafon.<\/p>\n

The future of building lies in the past<\/h4>\n

Construction culture in Vorarlberg is characterised\u00a0by an amalgamation of innovation\u00a0and tradition. Craftsmen have long known\u00a0how to make use of weatherproof silver fir,\u00a0constructive timber protection and cladding\u00a0with shingles. Their construction technique\u00a0outlasted even centuries. Impressive proof\u00a0can be seen in the still existing examples\u00a0of typical Bregenzerw\u00e4lderhaus\u00a0(Bregenz forest\u00a0houses), standing there\u00a0since the 17th century.<\/p>\n

Our heart beats for wood<\/h4>\n

Scientific research has shown that staying\u00a0in timber constructed\u00a0houses reduces heart\u00a0rate and that, by means\u00a0of an equilibrated ratio\u00a0of temperature and humidity,\u00a0the room climate
\nreduces stress for heart\u00a0and circulation, at the same time being\u00a0able to increase concentration. \u201cVorarlberg holzbau_kunst\u201d has been focusing for quite\u00a0a while on the benefits of timber and was\u00a0awarded for its initiative in the field of regional\u00a0value creation \u201cTimber is the construction\u00a0material of the third millennium.\u00a0Highest quality in architecture and completion\u00a0are the tradition of timber construction\u00a0in Vorarlberg and at the same time a recipe\u00a0for success in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201e\u201cWood reduces the\u00a0heartbeat:\u00a08600 beats per day\u201d – holzbau_kunst<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Since 1997, holzbau_kunst awards the timber\u00a0construction prize every two years.\u00a0Amongst last year\u2019s winners, the restored\u00a0Alte S\u00e4ge (Old Saw) in Bezau which, due to\u00a0the cleansed and sensitively amended, uninsulated\u00a0timber bolt works and the open attic,\u00a0has become a place of communication and\u00a0cultural events. The \u201cBauernhof Be-Greifen\u201d\u00a0[tangible farmhouse] in Egg shone in the\u00a0category of \u201cinnovative timber applications\u201d.\u00a0The generous entrance to the farm is very inviting.\u00a0A two-storey gallery in light-coloured\u00a0timber enables insights into farm life, freerange\u00a0husbandry and cheese production,\u00a0the element of an in-house cinema being a\u00a0surprise. Visitors\u00a0who would also like to rise high in terms of\u00a0metres above sea level had best visit mountain\u00a0chapel Alpe Vordere Niedere at a height\u00a0of 1,600 metres. From Bezau you can take a\u00a0cable car to Baumgarten and from there a\u00a015 minutes walk to the timber construction\u00a0award winner 2011. Right at the edge of a deep slope, this timber chapel on rock foundations\u00a0offers a breath-taking mountain\u00a0panorama, the silence and calm of which
\nare only interrupted by paragliders. Here\u00a0traditional Vorarlberg timber construction\u00a0meets the introversion of Byzantine sacral\u00a0buildings. Bathhouses lake Bodensee also\u00a0look back to a long tradition. The Bathhouse\u00a0at Kaiserstrand in Lochau convinces not only\u00a0bathers with its beautiful view of the Pf\u00e4nderstock-mountain and Bregenz, but also the\u00a0juries. In 2011 the new design of the building\u00a0won the timber construction prize with its\u00a0multi-functional two-storey platform and\u00a0the design element of timber.<\/p>\n
