Małgorzata Mirga-Tas became known to a broad art audience through her contribution to the Polish Pavilion at the 59th Venice Biennale. Using needle, thread, fabric and the cultural narratives of the gipsy community in her native Poland, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas overwrites social stereotypes, misunderstandings and prejudices that exist towards this minority. In her textile works, she weaves the relationships of the Roma into the fabric of European societies and reconciles the art canon with its folkloric sources. For the Kunsthaus Bregenz, Mirga-Tas is planning a series of newly developed, elaborately produced wax sculptures in addition to her textile works. These will include animals such as bears that live in the artist’s homeland, Czarna Góra, the densely forested Tatra Mountains in southern Poland, as well as life-size male figures. The Kunsthaus Bregenz, with its impressive architecture and unique atmosphere, is the ideal place to give these new works the space they deserve.
