Screen printing, photography and textiles are Monika Pichler’s favourite media. In the exhibition curated by Gabriele Spindler at the Kubin-Haus, the artist presents a selection of her tapestries, which have been an essential constant in her artistic work since the early 1990s. They consist of a combination of ornamental forms and photographic motifs that are transferred to the fabric using screen printing. In terms of content, they often refer to contemporary global crises, war, persecution, flight, environmental destruction and climate change, but also to literary themes and figures. The selected image motifs originate on the one hand from media found footage material, and on the other hand from the artist’s own drawings and photographs. The blurring of the motifs, which is created by screen printing on the velvety surface of the velour, gives the carpets, in combination with the ornamental elements, an unmistakable visual effect, which is further enhanced by the installation of the carpets across the entire floor of the exhibition space.
