Although Kazuna Taguchi’s works are digitally informed, they are based on an analogue and manual approach to the transition between painting and photography: in a sophisticated process, Taguchi brings together various media-reproduced image sources (including references to her earlier work, to anonymous fragments from magazines or to historical works of art) to create a hybrid photomontage, translates these into a painting or a drawing, which she in turn photographs in various environments and whose prints she manipulates in the darkroom. The artist compares the multiple layers and repeated interventions, which lead to the interpenetration of different textures, time levels and narrative spaces, with the work of a painter who tirelessly returns to her easel. At the same time, the intangible distance that emanates from the ghostly, enraptured and obviously constructed photographs testifies to Taguchi’s resistant engagement with a present that is determined by visual feedback loops and the narcissistic de- and reconstruction of the digital ‘self’.
