Under the motto ‘ABGESAGT?’, the 10th International Playwrights’ Festival Graz invites you to experience the diversity and urgency of contemporary theatre art. In the midst of a funding policy that is increasingly jeopardising cultural diversity, uniT’s DRAMA FORUM, together with its main partners Next Liberty and TaO! – Theater am Ortweinplatz is sending a powerful signal: for open spaces, living democracy and the creative power of theatre. Under the leitmotif ‘The incompleteness of theatre and democracy’, the audience can expect a multifaceted programme of world premieres, readings, discourse formats and performances – an invitation to rediscover theatre as a communal space for shaping our democracy. The festival, under the direction of Edith Draxl, begins at Next Liberty with a ‘festival opening with speeches that we really need’. Here, speakers will take a clear stance on the current debate about the role of art and culture in society – just as one would wish for from political decision-makers. The theatrical prelude will be provided by the Residenztheater Munich with ‘Und Und oder oder oder oder oder oder und und oder oder und oder oder oder und oder oder und oder oder oder und und’ by Nele Stuhler, directed by Franz Xaver Mayer. The comedy deals with opposites – hilariously, musically and poetically.
Drama Walks
This year’s Drama Walks will take visitors to an urban triangle around Reitschulgasse – between the Kunst Klub Kräftner, the Graz Hungarian Theatre and the new Creative Space. Visitors move from place to place and immerse themselves in the texts of the authors nominated for the Retzhofer Drama Prize. Reitschulgasse becomes a stage for new dramatic voices.
Doing Democracy
The ‘Doing Democracy’ professional programme invites you to actively engage with democracy. The speakers and workshop leaders include, among others: Political scientist Tamara Ehs, journalist Toni Titze, Chairwoman of the Migrant Advisory Board and artist Irina Karamarković and author Marcus Peter Tesch. In a workshop, the media and performance art collective LIGNA will examine the physical practice of fascism based on scenes from ‘Rausch und Zorn’, inspired by Brecht’s play. In the staged reading ‘7×7 Minutes’, seven texts come together that do not have to be of one mind – expectations are overturned, perspectives shifted.
