Classical art historiography usually views the modernist era as a linear sequence of demarcated movements. Works by women, queer people or people of colour often remain invisible. The exhibition curated by Stephanie Auer invites us to rethink this narrative. Instead of perpetuating stylistic-historical categorisations, the focus is on the individuality of the individual artistic practices, which range from abstract to figurative, from critical to activist. These positions are radical not only because they question social and artistic conventions. What is radical above all is the consistency with which the artists* pursue their path – even in the face of resistance. Many of their themes have lost none of their topicality to this day. More than 60 female* artists from over 20 countries enter into a lively dialogue when painting meets textile design, sculpture meets printmaking, drawing meets photography and film. Works by Gertrud Arndt, Benedetta, Romaine Brooks, Claude Cahun, Elizabeth Catlett, Sonia Delaunay, Inji Efflatoun, Alexandra Exter, Leonor Fini, Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest, Hannah Höch, Erika Giovanna Klien, Katarzyna Kobro, Käthe Kollwitz, Lotte Laserstein, Tamara de Lempicka, Alice Lex-Nerlinger, Jeanne Mammen, Marlow Moss, Alice Neel, Gazbia Sirry, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Charley Toorop, Fahrelnissa Zeid and many more
