After the end of World War II in Europe, much remained uncertain. The Nazi regime and the war had not only left behind a damaged city, but also a social and political field of ruins. Reconstruction therefore involved not only the destroyed buildings but also the development of confidence in the future and new values. What steps had to be taken in a post-war society in Graz that was initially concerned with existential questions? People stayed and came, they waited, acted and hoped in the midst of ruins and possibilities. The two decades from 1945 to 1965 showed that something new was beginning. Not suddenly and in a straight line, but gradually and sustainably. It was possible to create a democratic society along with unimagined prosperity. The exhibition follows these traces: it tells of the new beginning in Graz and gives a voice to people who lived and worked at that time. Their selected biographies lead back into the uncertainty and show their individual paths. The exhibition, curated by Bernhard Bachinger and Annette Rainer, invites you to pause and listen: about what was and what became of it.
