Everyone has suffered from fever; it is the body’s rebellion, an insistence on its own agency. It signals not only an intrusion or an injury, but the body’s refusal to remain neutral – to remain cool and collected. In the heightened temperature of fever, the senses sharpen. Colours shine brighter, sounds penetrate deeper. The periphery urgently turns every sensation into a small fire. In the heat, we see not only what threatens us, but also what energises us – what makes us feel most alive. And all this while we wait for it to die down. The fever dream hums on, permeated by the half-light of impermanent revelations. There is no standstill here, only a restless unfolding, the strange bursting of thresholds that dissolve and reform in endless succession. In a feverish state, the air seems to tremble, every breath a flare-up of something barely recognisable. The fever does not really end, rather it retreats, leaving behind a landscape of outlines – edges that glow, ripple and refuse to fade. In the morning residue of the fever, the world draws closer, more vivid in its fractures and its flow. Fevers is an exhibition of recent and newly commissioned works in sound and image by Welsh-born James Richards. It was curated by Tom Engels and will be accompanied by a publication by the Grazer Kunstverein, which will appear later this year.
