To describe collage as a mere technique is to make a mistake. Collage as a form of artistic expression presupposes a juxtaposition of signifiers – carriers of meaning – a semiotic collision. This happens even before the process of gluing. It is therefore primarily a mental operation, an intervention in language, be it visual or linguistic. The mental processes have already glued together what the hand will eventually glue. Like all adventures, ‘Operation Collage’ therefore begins in the mind: the world is subjected to an intervention – satirical, poetic, political, formal, but in any case subversive.
The exhibition, curated by Pérez Gil and Henriette Leinfellner, presents works by Wilfried Gerstel, Brigitta Höpler, Henriette Leinfellner, Javier Pérez Gil, Herbert Starek and Robert Svoboda.
