Travelling offered and continues to offer artists a wide range of inspiration: ancient buildings and landscapes under the southern sun or local mountain worlds or the Viennese countryside. The exhibition sheds light on this artistic love of travelling using masterpieces from the 18th and 19th centuries from the museum’s own collection. It spans the period from the ‘Grand Tour’ to the voyages of discovery and focusses the various landscapes and motifs that are analysed, as well as the examination of nature the examination of nature in the works of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Caspar David Friedrich Caspar David Friedrich, Jakob Alt, Thomas Ender and Tina Blau. Delicate drawings and colourful watercolours convey the longing for new horizons, individual experiences of nature and the travel conditions of the time.
