FOTO ARSENAL WIEN is showing Christine de Grancy’s pictorial narratives About the World and the Times for the first time. Since 1975, the artist has been telling the story of the metropolis of the former Habsburg empire from the perspective of contemporary witnesses in stone, whose legacy the small republic and its people must bear. Vienna’s identity is also based on its hierarchies and the rift between top and bottom, between power and powerlessness, between past and present. Since the 1980s, her extensive travel photography has focused on life in regions characterised by political and social upheaval and often underrepresented – such as the Sahrawi refugee camps, the Tuareg women in the Sahara, the polo players in Pakistan and the Roma in the Czech Republic.
