The times we live in are turbulent; we are experiencing profound upheavals: war, social division and the rise of authoritarian movements characterise the global climate. Uncertainty and fear dominate and are systematically fuelled. Elisabeth Gschiel raises her artistic voice quietly, subversively and powerfully at the same time. Gschiel’s works on gun violence are at the centre of the exhibition at Bildraum 01. The artist began her series Kaputte Waffen (Broken Weapons) in 2021 after the storming of the Capitol and expanded it in 2023 after the start of the Israel-Gaza War with the series Entschärfte Waffen (Disarmed Weapons). Deformed rifles, bent revolvers combined with everyday objects such as hand blenders or musical instruments visualise the attempt to translate powerlessness into artistic action. Elisabeth Gschiel transforms symbols of violence into fragile objects of peace – humorous, critical and deeply moving.
