Over four days, the Karlsplatz will vibrate with the finest sound and beats. Singer and songwriter Verifiziert will be responsible for the programme, together with musician and journalist Paul Buschnegg (Pauls Jets). For a long time, the utopia of the Vienna Pop Festival was to declare alternative music to be sky-high pop. Relatively unknown artists suddenly stood there at dusk on a huge stage – or in one of the surrounding halls; in front of a few hundred people instead of the usual 20 – and something shy, incomprehensible could become something fluid, something unifying, embracing, that briefly outgrew itself and everything. It was like a magic trick – Popfest had this quality – turning something niche into pop and transforming it for a moment, secretly.
Confronted with a pop city and even an entire pop country, Veri and Paul, as curators of Popfest 2025, pose the question of what the role of Popfest could be today. Is it enough with the pop poses, or should Popfest 2025 live up to its name in terms of contemporary art? The 16th Popfest Vienna will take place at Karlsplatz Open Air as well as indoors at the Wien Museum, the Technical University, Karlskirche and other venues.
