The presentation at the Salzburger Kunstverein is the first Austrian exhibition of the pioneering Palestinian artist Laila Shawa (1940-2022), who attended Oskar Kokoschka’s School of Seeing in Salzburg between 1960 and 1963. Curated by Jakub Gawkowski, the exhibition sheds light on Shawa’s multicultural visual language, which is characterised by irregular shapes and intense colours. She challenges traditional narratives of ‘the West and the rest’ through so-called ‘Islamo-Pop’ and comments on complex, politically charged themes with a vibrant colour palette and repetition of images.
