What connected the two exceptional photographers was more than their membership of the legendary Magnum Photos agency: it was a friendship that grew over decades – based on mutual appreciation, humour and the conviction that photography is more than a depiction of the world – namely a commentary on it. Elliott Erwitt (1928-2023) captured the small absurdities and great truths of everyday life with subtle humour, masterful composition and an unerring sense of the moment. His pictures tell of the comedy and melancholy of human existence with lightness and depth – always imbued with an unmistakable signature that makes him an icon of street photography. Thomas Hoepker (1936-2024), one of the most important representatives of documentary photojournalism, was a chronicler of his time. With empathy and narrative precision, he documented historical upheavals, social developments and the quiet scenes of everyday life. His work is characterised by a deep humanistic commitment and a clear photographic stance. The Leica Gallery Salzburg is showing carefully curated works from renowned archives, including Wetzlar and Frankfurt, and invites you to a photographic encounter full of attitude, humanity and narrative depth.
