In 1982, Jitka Hanzlová fled from the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic to West Germany, where she studied photography in Essen. Her biography characterises the central themes of her work: Exile, memory and identity. Hanzlová, born in 1958, is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary photographers. The Albertina exhibition shows ten of her most important series: Rokytnik (1990-1994) is dedicated to the artist’s home village of the same name, Forest (2000-2005) to the forest of her childhood. Later series of portraits in an urban environment, such as Bewohner (1994-1996) or Female (1997-2000), explore the relationship between the individual and their surroundings.
