FOTOHOF presents Sarker Protick, a contemporary artist from Dhaka, Bangladesh, whose long-term explorations combine the media of photography, video and sound in an ongoing meditation on the fleetingness of a moment, as well as on larger historical and political formations. In seemingly melancholy images, he makes his way through Dhaka, through the neighbourhood where he grew up and still lives today. The aesthetic sentiment is lost in the view of the people, animals and plants that can be seen against the backdrop of monumental construction sites, revealing itself as a means of linking different temporal levels. The unfinished parts made of cement and steel seem like frozen relics from a time when the megacities of the global South were storming towards a future whose deafening sound still seems to resonate through the images. Against this backdrop, Sarker Protick creates a personal narrative, an epic vision dedicated to life between the disruptions of colonialist and capitalist processes.
