Most Viennese people are familiar with the announcement made by vendors on street corners, in underground stations or at supermarket entrances: ‘Augustin! New Augustin!’ Augustin, the ‘first Austrian tabloid newspaper,’ made its debut in October 1995. This not only established a street newspaper in Vienna that provides an income for people at risk of poverty. The association behind it also immediately launched other high-profile campaigns, such as the Opferball (Victims’ Ball) – a counter-event to the Vienna Opera Ball that also made international headlines. Less ‘loud’ but all the more persistent, social workers have been supporting the newspaper sellers every day with their problems with the authorities, organising table tennis tournaments or simply helping them find suitable glasses. Over the past 30 years, the media landscape has changed as much as the city and population structure of Vienna. The exhibition, curated by Henrie Dennis, Oke Fijal and Claudia Poppe, tells the story of how Augustin has manoeuvred through the decades, what has changed and what has remained the same. In addition to a look behind the scenes of the association and countless cover stories, the exhibition focuses primarily on the vendors themselves. They show why Augustin is an integral part of Vienna.
