Paul Cézanne was once sitting there drawing when a passer-by asked: ‘Who are you doing this for all day?’ – ‘For the little birds.’ Regardless of whether the anecdote is authentic or not, the painter Barbara Schimpfle has prefaced an edition of her ‘Sketchbook from the Sattelberg’ with it, as it expresses something that corresponds to her own attitude towards drawing and painting. Born in Darmstadt in 1940, the artist studied stage design and costume studies at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. It was there that she met her future husband, the painter Klaus Schimpfle, who significantly influenced her free works. For years, she worked as an art teacher at the legendary ‘Schule der Phantasie’ in Munich. In the Kubin Haus, she is showing small and large-format, feather-light, flying studies of nature in watercolour, which deliberately contrast with the black and white gloom of Kubin’s drawings.
