Democracies around the world are increasingly in crisis; civil rights and opportunities for political engagement are being restricted or neglected, while the number of authoritarian regimes around the globe is increasing and global corporations are exerting more and more influence on political decisions. The project ‘Democracy is fun!’, designed by the Austrian artist collective mutual loop (Martina Tritthart & Holger Lang), addresses the fragility of democratic structures in today’s systems. For this project, the duo is working with a dozen Austrian, Romanian, Hungarian, Polish and German artists to create a very impressive, large and interactive installation that will occupy the entire first floor of the cigarette factory in Sfântu Gheorghe (central Romania) over several hundred square metres. With the help of sound, video and light installations, the project explores topics such as the mediatisation of politics and the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in decision-making processes. It also examines new forms of political participation and the relationship between grassroots activism and institutional politics.
