2025 marks the eightieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the Holocaust. In this last major anniversary year, there is a unique opportunity to welcome survivors who are still alive in South Africa and to learn from their personal testimonies. To mark the occasion, the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre is presenting the exhibition ‘More Important Than Life: The Underground Archive of the Warsaw Ghetto’. The Austrian Cultural Forum/Austrian Embassy Pretoria, the German Embassy and the Polish Embassy Pretoria are co-operation partners. The exhibition is curated by the Austrian Dr Mirjam Zadoff, Director of the Munich NS Documentation Centre. Insight into the Oneg Shabbat archive: One year after the start of the German war of aggression, the Nazis forced the Jewish population in Warsaw into a sealed-off ghetto. Under the code name Oneg Shabbat, a secret group documented everyday life and buried reports, letters and photos in milk cans and metal crates. After the war, around 35,000 pages were recovered – now part of the UNESCO World Documentary Heritage.
