███████ is made possible by a group of people who wish to remain anonymous. The team at Kunsthaus Bregenz has signed a confidentiality agreement to protect the identities of those involved. Not as a retreat, but as a method: a conscious rejection of the economies of authorship, legacy, and visibility. While anonymity has proven to be an effective tool for circumventing censorship or oppression in a context of ‘resistance,’ this person here questions the motivations of authorship and the economies associated with it. If there is no clearly identifiable authority or person(s) to whom the work can be attributed, questions about the creative impulse, mode of production, aesthetics and references to earlier works must be asked anew and differently.
A modular house measuring 7.2 by 7.2 metres, consisting of 249 individual aluminium parts and two glass panes, will be installed on the top floor of the Kunsthaus Bregenz. It is fully habitable, with a sleeping area, kitchen, bathroom and a retractable table. It is connected to electricity, water and the sewage system via the Kunsthaus Bregenz — the installation becomes a parasite. Parasitic architecture is a practice in which a new structure is attached to an existing building. The parasite benefits from the host’s infrastructure, whereby here at the Kunsthaus Bregenz, the parasite and host are intended to enter into a symbiotic relationship. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to inhabit the space — to sit down, lie down, make coffee, use the bathroom.
