Money means freedom; money is a means of payment. But money is more than that. What you can do with money – namely, more than just pay with it – and how much science is involved in our everyday means of payment can be explored in the CoSA special exhibition Der Schein trügt (Appearances are deceiving), curated by Gerlinde Andraschek. Visitors learn how gold can be chemically dissolved and why it is physically impossible to take a bath in coins – unless you are Scrooge McDuck.
The exhibition shows how much technology is involved in a banknote, as many security features are only visible in the right light. Under a microscope, we examine holograms, microprinting and magnetic strips and, along the way, learn how best to crack a safe.
