What if plants were more intelligent than we think? What if they observe, communicate – perhaps even dream? A bronze-shimmering foxglove floats in the dark green room, almost too beautiful to be true. The plant is called Digitalis ferruginea, captured by Dutch artist Elspeth Diederix in her series ‘The Miracle Garden’. It seems like botanical magic – attractive, mysterious, almost extraterrestrial. A symbol of what this exhibition promises: a journey into the unknown and speculative, into an intermediate realm between nature and fiction. The exhibition ‘Science/Fiction – A Non-History of Plants’ brings together works by over 40 international artists, spanning a range from historical pioneers such as Anna Atkins and Karl Blossfeldt to contemporary voices such as Agnieszka Polska (PL), Ágnes Dénes (HU) and Jochen Lempert (GER). In six fascinating chapters, visitors encounter plants as active beings, as observers, allies or political actors. Between blueprint, video, microscopy and science fiction imagery, new perspectives emerge on what we have long taken for granted: the surrounding greenery.
