The MQ Libelle and the terraced landscape in front of it created a “total work of art” at the Leopold Museum, designed by architects Laurids and Manfred Ortner in collaboration with Austrian artists Brigitte Kowanz († 2022) and Eva Schlegel. From the outset, Ortner & Ortner – who had already realised the Leopold Museum, the Kunsthalle Wien and the Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna in the late 1990s – pursued the vision of the MQ Libelle as a platform floating above the cultural area. Based on their urban utopias of the 1970s and 1980s, they further developed their vision in a series of large-format chalk drawings, among other things, which are on display in a focus exhibition at the Leopold Museum. The artworks conceived for the MQ Libelle by Brigitte Kowanz (Lichtkreise) and Eva Schlegel (veiled) are reflected in the two artists’ more recent, expansive installations in the Upper Atrium of the Leopold Museum, which are on display in Austria for the first time.
