In her exhibition Zwischen-Räume (Interstitial Spaces), Annerose Riedl relates images of spatial situations to sculptures. In the pictures, which she paints on discarded school maps, she creates almost empty spaces defined by a few perspective lines. Both the sculptures and the painted figures give the impression of transcending the boundaries between image and reality, moving into or out of the space. In her spatial images, the artist also combines the main motifs of her work, which include human figures and ladders. Her painted and wooden figures stand as a group in front of doorways or windows, or climb individually over ladders from one level of space to another. Another sculptural focus of the exhibition curated by Inga Kleinknecht is a series of works from a continuous creative phase in Annerose Riedl’s career. These are predominantly female figures who appear grounded, self-confident and self-deprecating.
