The Kunsthalle Wien presents Guan Xiao’s first solo exhibition in Austria. The exhibition comprises a series of entirely new sculptures and paintings that reflect the currents, conflicts and absurdities of a society shaped by the values of capitalism and liberalism. Guan Xiao describes this as the ‘ambivalent phase of life’ of teenagers: teenagers are generally considered impulsive, guided by their intuition and open to possibilities, change and uncertainty. They can be dramatic and plagued by self-doubt.
Teenager returns to fundamental themes such as food, clothing and shelter to address questions of progress and civilisation, tradition and spirituality, which are at the heart of Guan Xiao’s multifaceted, playful and poetic work.
