Get Your Head Around It is a tribute to the writer, cyberneticist, language theorist and musician Oswald Wiener (born 1935, Vienna; died 2021, Styria), with whom Hellermann studied epistemology at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in the 1990s. The work is inspired by a conversation between the artist and her teacher and refers to Wiener’s theory that the mind functions like a machine that processes mental images in programmed sequences, thus controlling the movement of ‘signs’ or information. According to von Hellermann, Wiener claimed that ‘nothing is in our heads’. The commissioned work is von Hellermann’s first solo exhibition in Austria.
