The Viennale is Austria’s most important international film event and also one of the oldest and best-known festivals in the German-speaking world. Every year in October, the Viennale takes place in beautiful cinemas in the historic centre of Vienna, giving the festival an international flavour and a distinctive urban flair. The Viennale programme comprises a carefully selected range of new films from around the world and Austria, including several international premieres. The selection of around 300 films offers a cross-section of bold filmmaking that stands out from mainstream aesthetics and is politically relevant. The programme includes great titles that have premiered worldwide from Cannes to Buenos Aires and vary greatly in form and length, as well as tone and genre. In recent years, the Viennale has established itself as a fixture on the international festival scene: it has become a festival that offers a high-quality programme in a relaxed urban atmosphere in autumn, when Vienna is at its most attractive. It presents an exciting selection of the latest trends in contrast to historical references. It is a festival of information, surprises, discoveries and, above all, films.
