The exhibition ‘Vally Wieselthier: Sculpting Modernism’ is the first retrospective in the United States dedicated to this Austrian-Jewish artist. The exhibition brings together works from international collections and showcases her innovative art, which broke down the barriers between fine art and craft. With radical ceramics, bold forms, bright colours and playful nonconformity, she challenged traditional notions of femininity and beauty and established ceramics as an avant-garde medium. Another focus is her formative years in the United States, during which she brought her distinctive vision to New York and combined European modernism with the dynamism of American design. As a complement, the Austrian Cultural Forum New York is also exhibiting an installation by New York-based Austrian artist Sascha Mallon, which is intended to create a contemporary dialogue with Wieselthier’s works.
