The exhibition, which focuses on the unique creative philosophy of Korean architect Seung H-Sang, centres on the famous biblical quote, ‘In the beginning was the Word.’ The pillars of his work are writing and building, two arts that he considers symbiotic. Accordingly, he usually realises his projects first with words and only then with metal or bricks. Just as an architect plans and assembles materials into a physical structure, a writer arranges thoughts into a narrative. For Seung, a poem, a sketch and a building are therefore part of the ongoing process of giving form to ideas. Designing a building or a city is ultimately about writing a story about a better life.
This exhibition is an immersive journey through Seung H-Sang’s world of architecture and words: it allows visitors to follow how designs on paper are realised with concrete, steel and light. The show features a variety of fascinating materials that reveal the interplay of thought and space in Seung’s work, including essays, diaries, design sketches, architectural drawings, models, photographs, furniture and even a one-to-one replica of a moonbang, a traditional Korean room.
Presenting key projects from throughout his career—from contemplative memorials to innovative cultural spaces—ARCHITECTURE AND WORDS honours Seung’s extraordinary contribution to modern Korean architecture and his lifelong engagement with language as a fundamental component of architectural expression.
