How much freedom does music need to flourish? For over 45 years, the Saalfelden Jazz Festival has been inviting visitors to the breathtaking mountain world of the so-called Stone Sea, where it creates space for encounters, curiosity, creativity and exchange for four days in August.
For nine years now, the winter edition has complemented the big Saalfelden Jazz Festival in summer: small, refined and with a very special flair. In the heart of the Salzburg Innergebirge, ‘3 Tage Jazz’ invites you to nine concerts at four unique venues – from the historic parish church to the Kunsthaus Nexus, the Leogang Mining and Gothic Museum and the cosy AsitzBräu in the ski resort. A festival that brings jazz lovers together in a winter atmosphere.
One of the highlights is the duo of French cellist Vincent Courtois and Swiss pianist Colin Vallon. ‘Simple Fall’ is a journey through melancholy and beauty, in which classical rigour and improvised freedom gently intertwine. Intimate and poetic, they develop a fine musical fabric that combines classical elegance with modern sound awareness.
To mark its 20th anniversary, the Jazzorchester Vorarlberg, together with Martin Eberle and Benny Omerzell, is presenting a programme that lives up to its name: ‘Sonus Variegate’ stands for tonal diversity, striking contrasts and bold breaks. Between electronic beats, indie rock energy and orchestral sound art, a colourful soundscape unfolds, carried by a joy of playing and a desire to experiment.
French trombonist Robinson Khoury, on the other hand, creates a fascinating fusion of jazz, electronica and world music with Anissa Nehari and Léo Jassef in ‘MŸA’, while Jelena Popržan transports the audience into her own world of sound in her solo programme with viola, voice, looper and subtle humour. Between folk, world music, Viennese song, cabaret and jazz, a musical revue emerges that touches, surprises and gets under your skin.
