In her first international solo exhibition, Across the Water, Dutch artist Michelle Piergoelam explores the transmission of memory beyond official archives. Drawing on the hitherto little-known history of the Surinamese diaspora in the Netherlands, she weaves myths, dreams and family memories into new visual narratives. Her photographs, textiles and installations address cultural transmission and resistance in the context of colonialism and slavery. At the same time, Piergoelam’s poetic works reflect on the significance of collective memory and remembrance culture as living forms of historiography.
