The Salzburger Kunstverein is kicking off the new year with a painterly intervention by Ukrainian artist Kateryna Lysovenko, whose visual language deals with the ruptures of war and the precarious visibility of images in times of political emergency. The artist explores the relationship between ideology and painting, as well as the production of images of sacrifice in politics and art from antiquity to the present day. Lysovenko regards painting as a language that can either be instrumentalised or exist as a free, self-determined means of expression. Before the Russian invasion, she lived in Kyiv; today she lives and works in Vienna.
