It has been a quarter of a century since Tricky Women first saw the light of day, and so in 2026 the international animated film festival will celebrate its 25th anniversary at the METRO Kinokulturhaus and other venues in Vienna. Once again, the focus will be on bold, experimental, playful and rebellious animated works by women and/or genderqueer artists. Most of the programmes will also be available online worldwide in cooperation with KINO VOD CLUB. Having helped shape the world of animated film for a quarter of a century is not only a reason to celebrate joyfully, but also offers the opportunity to highlight the networks, collaborations, inspirations and stories that have been created and to actively carry them into the future. This is exactly what the anniversary programme invites you to do: audiences can look forward to cinematic highlights from 25 years of festival history as well as current, visionary animated film art in the competition and special programmes. At the same time, it offers an opportunity to reconnect with long-standing companions and influential personalities in animated film – including Caroline Leaf, pioneer of direct animation, who will be giving a workshop at the festival and providing insights into her legendary sand animation.
On the occasion of the festival, augmented reality installations will also be unveiled at Johanna-Dohnal-Platz in Vienna’s sixth district. The artistic works create a digital monument to Johanna Dohnal, Austria’s first Minister for Women’s Affairs and a symbolic figure in the fight for equality. They are part of feminist memory culture and bring feminist demands from the past and present into the public sphere.
