A directorial debut can be a daunting challenge, as it raises many expectations and can be received in different ways: as the announcement of a great new film talent or as a strange enigma that will only be understood and appreciated in the future, in the context of the director’s other films; as a promise that may never be fulfilled, as an eruption of creative energy that cannot be sustained, or as the beginning of a wealth of cinematic inventions. The Film Museum’s carefully curated film collection houses dozens of film debuts. The extensive Collection on Screen spring programme takes a look back at the past and presents some of the most famous debuts of the 20th century (Stroheim, Sternberg, Buñuel, Vigo, Welles, Kurosawa, Chabrol, Godard, Wiseman, Cassavetes, Akerman, Lynch, Jarmusch, Kitano, von Trier, Panahi). These films are combined with lesser-known works, perhaps even discoveries or surprises, as well as with some works from 2001 (Grisebach, Kunuk, Alonso) that heralded the 21st century with verve.
