Nikolaus Walter, one of the most important representatives of Austrian authorial photography, is a flâneur with a camera, a patient observer with an eye for the essential. His pictures are not mere illustrations, they are personal essays. While he gained international recognition with his sensitive documentary series, such as those on the harsh life in the Great Walser Valley or the ‘Toronto Cowboy,’ his portraits of artists are now on public display for the first time in such density. A central part of his work consists of long-term studies on social and cultural topics. For five decades, he has repeatedly captured artists in black-and-white photographs. The Galerie Lisi Hämmerle presents a selection of over 80 works from this cycle.
