Through her engagement with space and the body, empty spaces and absence, Czihak approaches every exhibition setting as a challenge to enter into a dialogue with the spaces and find the display that is precisely suited to them. Elisabeth Czihak works with moments of formal reduction and abstraction, with spatial emptiness and absence, with interstices and negative space. Yet her photographs only superficially depict empty spaces and architecture; on closer inspection, they probe the life and ‘experience’ of the spaces and buildings, seeking a ‘before’ and an ‘after’. And they often provide the impetus for further works in which Czihak continues and further condenses these moments through drawing, collage, sculpture or installation. Complementing the photographic works, and thematically linked to them, are objects created from some of the mirrors used in the photographs, mounted on wooden frames made specifically for this purpose.
