Analytical Beauty – Floral Images from 200 Years is dedicated to previously unseen floral depictions from the collection of the Neue Galerie Graz, with the range of motifs spanning from Biedermeier watercolours and Far Eastern colour woodcuts to contemporary approaches to floral representation. What is remarkable about all the works is the interplay between science and art, which reflects both the systematic pictorial documentation of botany in the form of realistic, detailed plant depictions and fully exploits the aesthetic qualities of the floral motif, one of the oldest known motifs in the history of art and culture. The perspective of the burgeoning natural sciences is particularly evident in the plant depictions of the early 19th century. It is interesting to note that modern science still frequently relies on painted representations of objects, as these can convey details and relationships far more vividly than photographic methods. However, the appeal of these depictions lies not least in the fact that they challenge and appeal equally to the ‘cool intellect’ and our collective ‘sense of beauty’.
