“Between City and Silence – Photographs by Kit Young” presents atmospheric, analogue black-and-white works by the British photographer. Kit Young’s work unfolds at the intersection of urban dynamism and contemplative tranquillity. His street photography from cities such as Paris, New York and Venice distils fleeting, poetic moments of city life into images of great atmospheric power. These are juxtaposed with tranquil, expansive landscape photographs from Scotland and Wales, which, through reduction, subtle tonal gradations and sensitive lighting, create an almost meditative effect. Strong contrasts, reflections and deliberately applied blurring lend the works a dreamlike quality, whilst precise compositions guide and focus the viewer’s gaze. All the gelatin silver prints on display were handcrafted by Kit Young in his darkroom specifically for this exhibition, revealing the close connection between photographic vision and masterful printing.
